How can I help?

*Updated October 2015*

*Post it notes

*Large Popsicle sticks

*A backpack or cloth bag that can be used to carry home Curious George (he is our "weekend friend")

*Small jump ropes

*Playground balls

*Non-fiction books with "How to" steps that explain the process of how to do things

If you are interested in volunteering in the classroom, please let me know the day and time that work best for you (for example, 11-12 on Mondays) so I can make a schedule.  Volunteers can begin coming in to help after Back to School Night.  Regular volunteers will need to have a TB test on file with the school office.

If you are interested I have many jobs like cutting, gluing, stapling, and folding that can be done at home.  That saves me a LOT of time, if you are willing to take a project home please let me know.

Thank you!!

  1. Of course, the best way to help is to spend time with your child and show them how much you value their learning. I encourage you to spend time checking over their homework and reading together. I cannot stress enough what a difference it makes when parents and children read together regularly. At this age it's so important to build a love of learning. Choose exciting and interesting books to read together that will encourage your child to want to read more.

I also want to encourage you to take your child on intellectually stimulating outings. Visit museums, zoos, aquariums, nature parks, and seek out activities that appeal to your gifted child's particular interests. All of these things help to build background knowledge and widen their understanding of the world.

I am so thankful to be a part of a learning community where parents want to be involved. There are many ways that you can help our scholars to have a wonderful, educationally rigorous, and fun school year.

I would love to have a few parents that could help out in the classroom with tasks such as filing and preparing materials for projects. If you are interested in coming in to help, please email me at lgravessmith@ggusd.us to schedule a day and time.

As a working mom I understand that not everyone is available during the school day. If you are interested, I could send materials home with you to assemble at home and return to school. Our monthly calendars that we use in the morning are a perfect example.

If your time is limited you can also feel free to donate materials to our class if you wish. I have a wish list that I would be more than happy to share with you.

  2. Can you post your wish list so I may refer to it as needed and purchase as the opportunity arises?

  3. Thanks for your interest in donating items! I have had many parents offer to donate materials in the past few days and I have been so overwhelmed by the generosity among our classroom families. I will post an updated wish list soon once I see what is still needed and most essential. I am a very lucky teacher to work with such generous parents!

  4. Here are a few of the items that I will be "wishing for" throughout the year. It's amazing how quickly 27 first graders can go through these items!

    *Ticonderoga brand #2 pencils

    *Colored copy paper

    *Kleenex

    *Hand soap

*Folders in class sets of 27 (different colors can be used for different projects)

*Unscented Baby wipes (for cleaning desks during flu season)

  5. Can you specify what kinds of folders are in the wish list? Would you please post some pictures of the folders? Thank you.

  6. Thanks for your question, I'm looking for basic folders for use as portfolios and for holding research/project papers. Pockets are nice but not necessary. Pendaflex is a good basic brand, here's an example:

DIfferent colors are useful for keeping the students organized when working on multiple projects.
